EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
