Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
